Jack the Ripper

Commodore 64

Jack the Ripper is a text adventure game based on the notorious 1880s Whitechapel murders in London. You play as an accidental suspect in the killing spree, framed for the crimes of history's most infamous serial killer . Set in 1888, the game opens with you leaving a pub where you discussed the Ripper murders, meeting an elderly stranger who speaks with a surprisingly young voice, then discovering a fresh victim's body moments later . The police soon hunt you as a scapegoat, and you must clear your name by unmasking the real killer . The parser accepts full English sentences, including adverbs like "quietly" and "quickly" . Gameplay runs in real time—events occur even when you issue no commands . The adventure splits into three parts, each providing a password to continue. Static, occasionally gory graphics appear at key locations .

Released in 1987 by CRL Group, developed by Jared Derrett and St. Bride's School . The game was created using Gilsoft's Professional Adventure Writing System . This was the first computer game ever classified by the British Board of Film Classification, receiving an '18' certificate for its gory graphics—leading W.H. Smith to refuse stocking it . Zzap64 awarded 78%, praising the stylish text and atmosphere but calling some visuals unnecessary . The Games Machine also gave 78%, while Computer & Video Games rated it 9/10 . Features include RAM SAVE for temporary position storage, plus permanent SAVE/LOAD to disk or tape . Commands like "GET CRUMPLED PAPER AND PUT IT IN POCKET" are understood . The C64 retains all three parts and the pseudo-real-time mechanic where a white cursor means the world continues evolving .
