Who Dares Wins II

Commodore 64

Who Dares Wins II is a vertically scrolling run-and-gun shooter. You control a lone SAS operative on a mission to liberate eight enemy-occupied outposts, advancing from the bottom of each screen upward. Armed with an unlimited rifle (short press) and five grenades (long press), you must eliminate enemy soldiers, officers, mortar crews, and bazooka operators while navigating terrain that includes rivers, narrow bridges, quicksand, and railways . New to this sequel are attacks from land, sea, and air: you face motorcyclists, speedboats, jeeps, trains, tanks, and two types of aircraft—bombers that scatter explosive shots and fighter squadrons that fire directly at you . You can rescue prisoners tied to trees before they are executed by firing squad, blow up enemy vehicles, and collect supply drops for bonus grenades and extra lives .

Released in November 1985 by Alligata Software, programmed by Steve Evans who also composed the music . Who Dares Wins II is a modified version of the original Who Dares Wins, which was withdrawn after legal action from Elite Systems (holder of the Commando license), who obtained an Anton Piller order seizing Alligata's stock . Alligata responded by making cosmetic and layout changes to the game, re-releasing it as this sequel to circumvent the injunction . The sequel features more diverse landscapes than its predecessor, shifting focus from desert warfare to urban and house-to-house combat . Zzap!64 awarded 90%, calling the game "fantastic" and the landscapes "incredible" . Revisited seven years later, the magazine gave a revised rating of 78%, noting it "just hasn't weathered the years too well" but remained "still very playable" . The German version was released under the title "Comando Parachutiste" .
