Alcazar - The Forgotten Fortress

Commodore 64

Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress is an action-adventure game with a Middle Eastern fantasy setting, developed and published by Activision in 1985 . You control an explorer traveling through a countryside dotted with twenty color-coded castles, each containing specific items and guarded by a major demon . Your goal is to reach Alcazar, the three-story fortress, find the throne room, and sit on the fabled crown . Along the way, you must collect tools such as a rope, raft, ring, oil, bleach, water, raw meat, and guns with limited bullets . Each item serves a specific purpose: rafts cross lakes, rings activate flying carpets, ropes repair broken bridges, and bleach or oil defeats certain demons like oilmoebas and griffins . The strategy map displays your position and castle entrances. Four difficulty levels adjust starting equipment, demon speed, and dungeon key availability .

Designed by Tom Loughry with manual written by Susan Monteleone, this version features a top-down perspective inside castles with room-to-room navigation . All castles except Alcazar are two stories high. The game offers unique audible and visual warnings: tigers leave pawprints, griffins breathe raspily, oilmoebas leave black slime, guards jingle keys, and flies buzz loudly to obscure all other sounds . Castles are procedurally generated, changing layout and item placement with each new game, providing high replayability . Controls use a single joystick: button cycles inventory, button plus direction fires the held item . Bottomless shafts are fatal, while Persian rugs may transport you or demons to random rooms. The game was later reissued by Mastertronic . Zzap!64 rated the C64 version 8/10, praising its addictive exploration despite simple graphics and sound .
