Mr Puniverse

Commodore 16

Mr. Puniverse is a flick-screen platform game with a humorous premise. In a land of dinosaurs, a new breed of human called "The Wimp" has appeared. Unable to hunt, these pathetic men need special vitamin pills hidden in dangerous locations. You play as the weediest example, collecting vitamins across 25 flick-screen locations. Laser beams block certain routes but can be disabled via levers, though this activates cannons. Other hazards include pulverisers (descending steel pillars) and moving platforms. The player has eight lives and an energy bar that depletes over time. Falling or touching hazards causes instant death. A unique "punicide" function (press D) allows quick death to escape dead ends. The jumping mechanic is satisfying, with mid-air direction changes possible.

Commodore 16

Released in February 1986 by Mastertronic and developed by Tony Kelly of Mr. Chip Software. This sequel to Big Mac features the same protagonist in a more refined platform experience. Commodore User magazine praised its excellent design, noting that thought is required to access pills. Graphics are simple but effective for the C16's limited 16K memory, while sound is functional. The game supports two players taking turns. Priced at Mastertronic's signature £1.99 budget point, Mr. Puniverse offers addictive, challenging gameplay with satisfying platform mechanics that showcase Kelly's solid understanding of the C16 hardware.
