Jetbrix

Commodore 16

Jetbrix is an arcade puzzle-action hybrid combining brick-breaking with gravity-defying movement. The player controls a jetpack-equipped character navigating a vertical playfield filled with colored bricks. Instead of a traditional paddle, the protagonist flies directly through the screen, using momentum to smash bricks while avoiding hazards. The goal is to clear all bricks from each stage to progress. Some bricks require multiple hits, while others contain power-ups. The jetpack mechanic requires managing fuel consumption and thrust carefully. Unlike traditional breakout games, Jetbrix puts the player directly in control of the destructive element, creating a more active gameplay experience. The game features multiple levels of increasing difficulty, with brick formations becoming more complex as the player advances.

Commodore 16

Released in 1986 by Mastertronic and developed by Shaun Southern of Mr. Chip Software, Jetbrix is a technical gem from the creator of Kikstart and Arthur Noid. Southern pushed the limited 16K memory of the Commodore 16 to its limits. The game features smooth jetpack physics and responsive controls despite hardware constraints, with colorful brick graphics standing out against the C16's typically muted palette. Unlike many C16 ports suffering from slowdown, Jetbrix delivers a complete arcade experience with consistent frame rates. Mastertronic released it at their budget price of £1.99. While lacking graphical flourishes of more powerful systems, it remains one of the most polished and addictive titles in the C16 library, demonstrating Southern's mastery of the platform.
