Knightmare is a first-person dungeon-crawling role-playing game based on the popular Anglia Television children's game show of the same name. You lead a party of four adventurers through the dungeons of Dunshelm on a quest to defeat the evil Lord Fear. To succeed, you must recover four legendary artifacts: the Shield of Justice, the Sword of Freedom, the Cup of Life, and the Crown of Glory. The game is built on the same engine as Tony Crowther's earlier title Captive, but unlike that game's procedurally generated levels, all dungeons here were designed by hand. An overworld forest connects four distinct dungeons, each guarded by a tree guardian requiring a specific item to pass. Treguard, the Dungeon Master from the TV series, appears throughout to offer hints. Combat is real-time, and the mouse-driven interface allows interaction, equipment, and spellcasting.
Atari ST
Released in 1991 by Mindscape and developed by RATT, the Atari ST version features programming by Antony Crowther, graphics by Steve Leney, and music by Richard Joseph. The ST version runs on 512KB of RAM from two floppy disks and is controlled primarily via the mouse. Unlike the Amiga version, the ST edition displays only 16 colours on-screen, resulting in a noticeably drabber, grey-brown palette. Similarly, the soundtrack plays through the AY chip rather than sampled audio. Critical reception was mixed: ST Format noted that Knightmare "takes every cliché from RPGs and does it all again," concluding it is "like Dungeon Master, only not as good." Nevertheless, aficionados of the genre will find a tortuous maze filled with monsters to bash.
