Gem'X

Atari ST

Gem'X is a puzzle game that challenges your logic under pressure. Developed by German studio Kaiko, the game presents you with two rectangular grids of coloured gems. The field on the right is the static target, while the field on the left is the one you manipulate. Your goal is to make the left grid identical to the right grid within a limited number of moves and a strict time limit. The challenge lies in the colour-changing mechanic: the gems follow a fixed sequence (red, green, blue, pink, yellow). Clicking on a gem lowers its colour value by two steps, while the four adjacent gems each lower by one step. Yellow gems cannot be lowered further; clicking on them causes them to implode, allowing gems above to fall into the vacant hole. The game includes 26 mines (groups of 16 levels each). Accompanying you is Kiki, an anime-style girl who provides encouragement.

Atari ST

Released in April 1991 by Demonware, the Atari ST version was published at a significantly lower price than the Amiga version, offering excellent value. The game supports both mouse and joystick control, and the soundtrack was composed by legendary musician Chris Huelsbeck. The ST version received a score of 9 out of 10 from TOS magazine, which praised its outstanding full-screen graphics, excellent sound, and highly addictive gameplay that proves "even games with simple mechanics can be incredibly captivating." A helpful undo function allows you to reverse the last move, though the timer continues ticking relentlessly. Bonus points are awarded based on remaining time. A deep, challenging puzzle experience that rewards careful planning.
