Raiden is a vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up set in the year 2090. The Earth is under attack by alien forces, and the World Alliance of Nations has developed an experimental supersonic fighter-bomber named Raiden as humanity's last hope. You pilot this craft through eight stages of intense aerial combat, destroying enemy aircraft, tanks, turrets, and ground installations. The game features two main weapon types: the Vulcan cannon (a wide forward shot) and the Plasma laser (a concentrated beam). Power-up icons cycle through different weapon upgrades, bomb stocks, and shield enhancements. The arcade original was known for its no-nonsense action, requiring sharp reflexes rather than secret moves. Boss encounters end each level. The game supports single-player only on Lynx, unlike the arcade's two-player co-op.
Atari Lynx
Published by Telegames in 1997, this port attempts to capture the arcade classic on handheld hardware. The sprites are clean and faithful to the original . However, they are not scaled down enough for the Lynx screen, leaving little maneuvering room when multiple enemies appear . Enemy flight paths and strength values were altered, making some standard enemies suicidal kamikazes while bosses become pushovers . Power-up cycles are much slower, forcing risky waits. The game lacks adjustable difficulty. According to Robert A. Jung's IGN review, the sound effects are forgettable with only a brief title tune, earning a 5/10 . Graphics scored 9/10, overall rating 7/10 . The cartridge is played vertically (holding the Lynx lengthwise like Klax). The code is reportedly only 90% complete, with some copies crashing after level five . Best for experienced shooter fans with high frustration tolerance.
