Xybots is a third-person shooter set in a futuristic fortress overrun by hostile robots. You control one of two heroes—Major Rock Hardy or Captain Ace Gunn—navigating pseudo-3D mazes from a behind-the-back perspective. The game supports one or two players cooperatively on a split screen, though bullets can harm your partner. Enemies strafe and fire, while flying saucers carry coins and health. A unique control lets you hold fire and turn 90 degrees to look around corners. Between levels, you spend coins in shops on weapons, armor, speed, and keys.
Atari Lynx
Released in 1991 by Tengen, developed by NuFX. The Lynx version uses the handheld's sprite scaling to create a 3D world, with tunnels divided into squared sections. Graphics are nearly identical to the arcade original, with detailed enemy sprites. Several techno-rock tunes replace the arcade's voice samples. Difficulty is slightly easier—Xybots are less aggressive, and you start with 35 coins. IGN rated the Lynx version 8 out of 10, calling it "a solid translation" with all original features.
