Checkered Flag is an Indy-style open-wheel racing simulation that puts you behind the wheel of a high-performance race car. From a third-person perspective behind your vehicle, you race across 18 unique tracks against up to nine computer-controlled "drone" opponents or up to five human players via ComLynx cable. Before each race, you can choose from Practice, Single Heat (one race), or an 8-race Tournament where points determine the champion. Additional options include race length (1 to 50 laps), transmission (automatic, 4-speed, or 7-speed manual), car color, and driver gender. A qualifying lap option determines your starting grid position based on your best time; otherwise, positions are randomized. The screen features side mirrors, a course map, odometer, speedometer, and gear indicator. Collisions with other cars cause both to spin out; hitting roadside obstacles stops your car completely.

Atari Lynx

Developed and published by Atari Corporation in 1991. Programmed by Eric Ginner and Jerome Strach, with art by Eric Elliot, Melody Rondeau, and Susan G. McBride, music by Bob Vieira. The game was a pack-in title with the Lynx in Australian and European markets. Entertainment Weekly named it the #7 greatest game of 1991, praising its "all-frills" features including digitized voice ("Gentlemen, start your engines") and six-player multiplayer. A flawed but beloved Lynx classic.
