Joust is an arcade action game that puts you in control of a knight armed with a lance, riding a giant flying ostrich (Player 1) or stork (Player 2). Your mission is to defeat enemy knights riding buzzards in aerial combat across a single-screen playfield filled with floating stone platforms suspended above a deadly lava pit. Unlike traditional shooters, combat is resolved by collision: you must strike an enemy from a higher elevation to destroy the buzzard and its rider. Once defeated, the enemy falls and leaves behind an egg that must be destroyed before it hatches into a more dangerous opponent. The game features three enemy knight types: Bounder, Hunter, and Shadow Lord. Environmental hazards include crumbling platforms, a Lava Troll whose hand reaches up to grab low-flying knights, and the dreaded pterodactyl. The game supports two-player simultaneous play.

Atari 7800

Released by Atari Corporation in 1987, the Atari 7800 version of Joust is widely regarded as an excellent arcade adaptation. The port preserves most arcade features including all enemy types, the Lava Troll, the pterodactyl, and the egg-hatching mechanic. The game supports two-player simultaneous play, faithfully recreating the cooperative and competitive dynamics of the arcade original. Critics note that while character sprites are slightly less detailed, the gameplay is highly faithful and responsive. The primary drawback is hand fatigue from constantly flapping the ostrich using the side button on the 7800's Pro-Line joystick. The physics closely match the arcade original. Joust for the Atari 7800 remains a must-have title for collectors and a faithful conversion of an innovative arcade classic.
