Robot Tank

Atari 2600

Robot Tank is a first-person tank combat simulation that places you in a futuristic war against rogue war machines. In the year 2095, a division of armed Robot Tanks has stopped obeying commands from Computer Central and is now rampaging across the western countryside, blistering everything in sight as they advance towards downtown Santa Clara, California . You must command your own Robot Tanks from a remote station, using radar to locate enemy tanks and your cannon to destroy them before they reach their target . The enemy is organized into twelve squadrons of twelve tanks each; destroying an entire squadron earns you a bonus reserve tank . You begin with one active tank and three reserves, with a maximum of twelve bonus tanks allowed at any time . A military clock tracks the passage of time, and weather conditions—fog, rain, and snow—are announced each morning, affecting visibility and mobility .

Atari 2600

Designed by Alan Miller, one of Activision's founding programmers who previously created StarMaster, and published by Activision in 1983 . The game features four damage sensors (Video, Cannons, Radar, Treads) that flash on your control panel when hit by enemy fire; damaged components are irreparable and significantly impair performance . If video is damaged, the screen blacks out periodically; damaged treads reduce mobility to a crawl . The game features a full day/night cycle, changing weather conditions that rival later NES titles, and the ability to intercept enemy rockets mid-flight by shooting them . Considered one of the best-looking and most advanced games on the 2600, Robot Tank is a technical showcase for the aging hardware.
