Garou: Mark of the Wolves is a 2D fighting game developed and published by SNK, originally released for the Neo Geo arcade system in November 1999. Known as Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves on home consoles, it is the ninth and final mainline installment in the Fatal Fury series, set ten years after the events of Real Bout Fatal Fury. The story follows Terry Bogard and his adopted son, Rock Howard, as they enter the "Maximum Mayhem" tournament to uncover secrets about Rock's lineage. The game abandons the traditional two-plane fighting system in favor of single-plane battles. Gameplay introduces the T.O.P. system, which boosts attack power and regenerates health when the life gauge enters a selected zone, and the "Just Defend" system, rewarding precise blocking with health recovery. The roster is completely revamped, with Terry being the only returning character.

Arcade

Released in Japanese arcades on November 26, 1999, this version runs on Neo Geo MVS hardware and is considered the purest version of the game. It pushes the Neo Geo's graphical capabilities to the limit, offering some of the best-looking pixel art of its era. The arcade version was critically acclaimed and was listed as the most-successful arcade game of the month in Japan. Reviewers praised its fluid sprite animations, detailed stages, musical score, tight controls, and deep mechanics. The game is often compared favorably to Capcom's Street Fighter III, with many considering it SNK's masterpiece and one of the greatest fighting games ever made. However, the arcade version lacks arranged soundtrack and bonus content found in home ports.
