Astra Superstars is a 2D versus fighting game released in arcades in 1998 by Sunsoft and distributed by Tecmo in Japan. It is Sunsoft's fourth fighting game after Galaxy Fight and Waku Waku 7. The game features an airborne-based combat system where all fighters possess magical abilities, allowing them to fly across the arena while battling. Players select from eight anime-style characters to compete in a series of three-round fights, aiming to challenge the evil Satan Volte. Gameplay utilizes an 8-way joystick and six buttons, with attacks ranging from basic moves to powerful "Star Specials" that drain the star meter. A unique dialogue system before each match allows players to select one of three sentences, influencing opponent difficulty by "Heating Up" or "Cooling Down" them. The game features a Story Mode and 1P VS. 2P mode.
Arcade
Released on June 6, 1998, Astra Superstars runs on the Sega Titan Video (ST-V) arcade hardware, based on Sega Saturn architecture. The cabinet features horizontal raster display with 704x513 resolution and 6,144 colors. The game was illustrated and designed by SANTACLAUS, with planning by Michio Okasaka and Meisondassi, character design by Meisondassi, and music composed by Kazuo Nii, Atsushi Takada, and Satoshi Asano. The airborne combat distinguishes it from traditional fighters, with characters floating at mid-level and able to swoop or zoom across the screen. Combos can send opponents bouncing like pinballs, and aggressive play is rewarded. The game's vibrant pastel art style contrasts with its chaotic action. The arcade version was released exclusively in Japan and has since become a cult classic among fighting game enthusiasts.
