Bells and Whistles

Arcade

Bells & Whistles, known in Japan as Detana!! TwinBee, is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up released by Konami for arcades in February 1991. The fifth entry in the TwinBee series, it marks the debut of pilots Light and Pastel, who take control of the TwinBee and WinBee ships to save Planet Mel from the invading alien Iva. The game features a whimsical, cartoonish art style with vibrant, colorful graphics. Gameplay follows the classic TwinBee formula of shooting airborne enemies while dropping bombs on ground targets. New mechanics include a charge shot, unleashing a powerful "Big Shot" attack when the fire button is held and released. The iconic bell power-up system returns, with seven colored bells offering different benefits: yellow for score, white for twin cannons, blue for speed, green for ship duplicates, red for a shield, purple for protected duplicates, and black for speed reduction. The game features seven stages with a second loop unlocked upon completion.

The game proved popular among Japanese arcade players, earning several awards from Gamest magazine. Critics praised the addictive gameplay, colorful graphics, and charming presentation, though some noted the game's short length. The European and North American title reflects the game's playful tone and iconic bell-collecting mechanic.
