Syvalion is a unique arcade shooter developed and published by Taito, released in Japan in October 1988. Designed by Fukio Mitsuji, creator of Bubble Bobble, the game breaks from shooter conventions by eschewing forced scrolling in favor of free movement through maze-like environments. You control Syvalion, a golden mechanical dragon stolen from an alien race called the Varia. Its primary weapon is a stream of fire, which can be used to destroy enemies and deflect bullets. The fire is limited and must be recharged by moving around. Enemies consist of robots and tanks, and each level ends with a boss battle. A unique aspect is its randomized nature; upon starting, players choose between fixed "Training" mode and "Story" mode, where stage order, enemy placement, and plot elements are procedurally generated. The game features over 100 possible endings, a nod to Taito's Darius series. Syvalion is also a spin-off of Darius, with the protagonist's story intertwining with that universe.

Arcade

Syvalion runs on Taito's H System hardware, featuring a Motorola 68000 main CPU at 12 MHz and a Yamaha YM2610 sound chip. It supports two players in alternating play. One of the game's most distinctive features is its control scheme: an 8-way trackball and a single button. The game was produced by Hisayoshi Ogura of Taito's Zuntata sound team, with music by Yasuhisa Watanabe. The release was limited, exclusive to Japan with an international version cancelled. A soundtrack album was released by Pony Canyon on March 21, 1989. The arcade version is notable for its high difficulty, frantic speed, and unusual trackball controls, creating a challenging and memorable experience.
