SRD - Super Real Darwin

Arcade

SRD - Super Real Darwin is a vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up where you control a small fighter ship capable of mutating into different shapes as it collects power-ups . The game is a sequel to Data East's 1986 title Darwin 4078 and expands on its evolution system . The gameplay combines standard shooter mechanics with attacks separated for air and ground targets . At the start of each life, your ship begins in the "Hodoyodo" form and can evolve through a series of 12 different shapes by collecting "Evol" power-ups, each providing enhanced firepower . If you are hit by enemy fire, your ship de-evolves all the way to its weakest form, "Pister" . Additionally, after defeating each stage boss, an "Egg" power-up is available; collecting it creates an invulnerable clone fighter that fires sideways and can also be upgraded . The game supports up to two players in alternating turns .

Arcade

Released in October 1987 by Data East, SRD - Super Real Darwin runs on arcade hardware powered by an M6809 main CPU and a M6502 for sound, with YM2203 and YM3812 sound chips . It displays vertical raster graphics at a resolution of 240x256 pixels with a palette of 144 colors . A unique feature of the game is the DNA mechanic: collecting DNA strands from certain enemies allows your ship to re-evolve to a more powerful form immediately after respawning, with the number of strands determining the evolution level . This creates a strategic trade-off, as more powerful forms make the ship a larger target . A soundtrack album for the game was released by Alfa Records on October 5, 1988 . The game has been remembered for its punishing difficulty and intricate evolution system, making it a distinctive and challenging entry in the shooter genre .
