The Lost Castle In Darkmist is a vertically scrolling shooter set in a fantasy medieval world. You control a lone knight on a quest to battle through hordes of magical creatures. The gameplay is similar to Capcom's classic Gun.Smoke, with the battlefield scrolling automatically and you moving freely within the screen . Your knight can slash and shoot a variety of enemies, including slimes, humanoid reptiles, skeletons, living armor, and powerful magicians . Defeated enemies leave behind treasure chests that contain potions, power-ups, and bonus items, and your sword can be upgraded as you progress . Unlike many action games of the era, it features mini-bosses—more powerful versions of regular enemies—rather than traditional end-of-level bosses . Up to two players can play, taking alternating turns .

Arcade

Developed by Seibu Kaihatsu and licensed to Taito, the game was released in Japan in January 1987, though the title screen displays 1986 . It runs on arcade hardware powered by two Zilog Z80 main CPUs, with a Yamaha YM2151 sound chip handling audio duties . The game displays vertically oriented raster graphics at a resolution of 256x224 pixels, and the control panel features an 8-way joystick with two buttons, one for sword attacks and one for magic . It comes in a standard upright arcade cabinet . While not as widely recognized as some of Taito's other titles, the game is known for its challenging difficulty and progression, requiring players to remain in the center of the screen and keep moving to avoid being trapped by the scrolling walls . It remains a notable entry in the mid-1980s arcade action genre .
