TwinBee is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up that helped pioneer the "cute-'em-up" subgenre, released by Konami in 1985. You control TwinBee and WinBee, two anthropomorphic spaceships defending floating islands from the evil Lord Spice's army of whimsical enemies including flying fruit and kitchen utensils. One button fires at aerial foes, another drops bombs on ground targets. The signature power-up system involves shooting floating clouds to reveal bells, then shooting the bell to cycle colors: yellow (points), blue (speed up), white (twin shot), green (mirror Options), and red (barrier shield). A unique damage system allows the ship's side arms to be shot off before destruction, with an ambulance appearing to repair them—but only once per life.

Arcade

Released by Konami in Japan on March 5, 1985, this was the first game to run on Konami's Bubble System hardware with a Motorola 68000 CPU. The game features simultaneous two-player co-op, where ships can unite to perform powerful combination attacks. There are five stages, after which the game loops infinitely with no true ending. Contemporary arcade-goers praised the charming presentation, catchy music by Shigeru Fukutake and Yoshinori Sasaki, and innovative bell system. Critics noted the brutal difficulty spike in later stages—especially Stage 5, which is twice as long as any other—and the unforgiving respawn system leaving a depowered ship vulnerable to immediate death. The game is considered an early archetype of the "cute 'em up" genre alongside Sega's Fantasy Zone.
