Based on the 1989 blockbuster film directed by Tim Burton, Batman: The Movie is a multi-genre action game that follows the Caped Crusader as he attempts to take down his arch-nemesis, the Joker. The game is divided into five distinct stages that mirror the movie's plot: a side-scrolling platformer in the Axis Chemical Plant, a high-speed Batmobile chase through the streets of Gotham, a puzzle-based level in the Batcave, a flight sequence in the Batwing to snatch Joker’s parade balloons, and a final vertical climb up the Gotham Cathedral. Players must master various gadgets, including the Batarang and the grappling hook, to navigate hazards and defeat the Joker's henchmen.

Amstrad CPC

The Amstrad CPC version is widely celebrated as one of the finest 8-bit conversions of the era, frequently outshining its contemporary rivals. Developed by Ocean’s talented in-house team, it utilizes the CPC's Mode 0 graphics to deliver a vibrant, multi-colored experience that captures the dark aesthetic of Gotham City surprisingly well. While it lacks the smooth parallax scrolling of the 16-bit versions, the sprite work is exceptionally detailed and the gameplay remains remarkably fluid. The conversion was a critical darling, receiving a massive 95% rating from Amstrad Action and being labeled a "Mastergame." It successfully translated the tension of the Batmobile and Batwing sequences to the Z80 hardware, proving that the CPC could handle complex multi-load titles with style. Despite the high difficulty curve common to Ocean’s movie tie-ins, the precise collision detection and atmospheric AY-chip music made it a must-have title for the system's library.
