Footballer of the Year 2 is a unique football career simulation where you control a single ambitious young striker rather than an entire team. The game blends board game strategy, trivia quiz, and arcade action into a distinctive hybrid. You begin with ten "goal cards" – up to three can be played in each match, each giving you a shooting chance where arcade skills determine success. Before each shot, you study a tactical move plan on the chalkboard, then position yourself to execute the final strike. Goal cards eventually run out and must be bought for £600 each. Extra money can be earned in a "Double Your Money" football quiz, answering multiple-choice trivia questions within a time limit. You can pay £5,000 for a Transfer card, hoping for a bid from a better club. Consistent scoring may lead to an international call-up and the prestigious Footballer of the Year award.
