Gryzor is a run-and-gun shooter based on Konami's arcade classic Contra, renamed for European home computers . In the year 2633, the evil Red Falcon Organization has established a base on the Galuga archipelago near New Zealand in a plot to conquer the world . You play as Lance Gryzor (or Bill Rizer), a member of the elite Contra unit sent to destroy the enemy forces and uncover the alien entity controlling them . The game alternates between side-scrolling horizontal levels, single-screen tunnel sections, vertical climbing stages, and boss encounters. Weapons include the standard rifle and a laser power-up with greater firepower.
Amstrad CPC
Released in 1988 by Ocean Software, this version features colourful Mode 0 graphics with 16 colours . The gameplay is split into three sections loaded automatically when a level is completed, preserving the arcade's level structure . Weapons available include rapid fire machine gun, scatter gun with three-directional fire, laser gun, and a barrier granting temporary invulnerability . Unlike the Commodore 64 port, the CPC version uses flip-screen scrolling (advancing half a screen at a time) rather than smooth scrolling . The Games Machine magazine rated this version 82% . Contemporary reviewers praised the colourful graphics and playability , though modern enthusiasts criticise the choppy scrolling and awkward controls where ducking and aiming require holding the fire button . A faithful but technically compromised conversion of the arcade classic for Amstrad CPC owners.
