Basil the Great Mouse Detective is a platform adventure game based on the 1986 Disney animated film. You play as Basil, a mouse residing in the basement of Sherlock Holmes' 221B Baker Street. The evil Professor Ratigan has kidnapped Basil's friend, Dr. Dawson, and Basil must scour London for clues to find the villain's hideout. The game takes place across three areas: London's shops and docks, the sewers, and finally Ratigan's den. Basil explores multi-screen platform chambers, squeezing through letter slots and holes in walls. In each area, five real clues must be found by searching objects like bags, jars, and chests using a magnifying glass. Ratigan has scattered eight fake clues; these must be identified and discarded. Collecting all five real clues reveals the exit to the next level. Cheese restores energy, while mousetraps can be laid to temporarily stop enemies.
