King's Quest VI

Amiga

King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow is a seminal point-and-click adventure that follows Prince Alexander in his quest to find Princess Cassima, whom he met at the end of the previous game. Guided by a vision, Alexander travels to the Land of the Green Isles, a realm steeped in mystery and divided by ancient feuds. The gameplay is a masterclass in adventure design, offering a branching narrative with multiple paths and two distinct endings—the "short" and "long" versions—depending on the player's thoroughness. The game is famous for its intricate puzzles based on mythology and logic, its rich dialogue, and a deeply emotional story that balances fairy-tale wonder with darker, more mature themes.

Amiga

Released in 1994, the Amiga version of King's Quest VI was a late arrival that aimed for maximum compatibility rather than pushing the newer hardware. Unlike many other high-profile adventures of the time, Sierra did not produce a specific AGA version, opting instead to keep the game compatible with OCS/ECS machines like the Amiga 500 and 600. This meant the vibrant 256-color VGA palette of the PC original was reduced to 32 colors. Despite this limitation, the artists used clever dithering to maintain the beauty of the hand-painted islands. The game was notably massive, spread across 10 floppy disks, making a hard drive almost essential to avoid constant disk swapping. While it lacked the digitized speech of the CD-ROM version, the Amiga port featured a high-quality soundtrack that utilized the Paula chip to deliver Sierra's iconic orchestral themes, providing a grand experience for adventure fans on the platform.
