Starblade

Amiga

StarBlade is a sci-fi action-adventure set in the Orion galaxy in the year 3001. Humanity has been decimated by the ruthless Cephalhydras, whose geneticists have created Genolyn, a mutated Queen capable of spawning super-warriors. You play as Storm Walker, pilot whose mission is to locate and eliminate Genolyn before she breeds. Gameplay mixes space combat, planetary exploration, and ship management. You navigate the StarBlade through space engaging in combat, while using the Alta shuttle to explore planets. On planet surfaces, you search for spare parts and magnetic cards with clues, and buy and sell goods to keep your ship operational. Developed by Silmarils, the game features their signature large animated characters and detailed graphics.

Released in 1990 by Silmarils, with Palace Software handling distribution outside France, Italy, and Spain. Coded by Louis-Marie Rocques, Michel Pernot, and Pascal Einsweiler, with graphics by Jean-Christophe Charter and music by Fabrice Hautecloque. StarBlade received mixed reviews from the Amiga press. Zzap! magazine gave 67%, praising graphics and atmosphere but criticising repetitive gameplay and basic combat. Amiga Action awarded 66%, noting similar concerns. The Games Machine gave 68%, while The One magazine later gave the budget re-release a 42% score, highlighting cumbersome controls and lack of variety. The game was praised for its interesting concept, but many reviewers found the ship repair mechanics overly complex and the action too monotonous to sustain engagement, resulting in an ambitious title that ultimately failed to reach its full potential.
