Defenders Of The Earth

Amiga

Defenders of the Earth is an action-platformer based on the 1986 animated television series. The game features veteran comic-book heroes Flash Gordon, the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and his bodyguard Lothar . The evil Ming the Merciless has kidnapped their children, and the team must rescue them from his fortress . You play as Flash, journeying through side-scrolling areas of Ming's castle, shooting enemies and avoiding security cameras that detect your presence . Flash can call on the other Defenders for assistance: Mandrake creates magical bridges, the Phantom kicks down doors, and Lothar breaks locks . The game requires quick progress, as Ming's surveillance system raises the alarm if you linger too long.

Amiga

Released in 1990 by Enigma Variations . The Amiga version features smooth 50 frames-per-second scrolling and colourful cartoon-style graphics . The intro music faithfully converts the show's Saturday matinee theme. Large, impressive monsters appear as superbaddies, including one resembling ED-209 . The play area is slightly larger than other versions with smooth parallax scrolling. Critical reception was mixed: while technically competent, reviewers criticized the repetitive gameplay where each level resembles the last, frustrating difficulty, and dated 8-bit game design concepts. The action consists of running through mazes, leaping chasms, and shooting endless enemies. Considered fun for a few games, but frustration sets in quickly .
