Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters is an isometric multidirectional shooter developed by Atari Games and released in arcades in 1989 . The game is styled after campy 1950s B-movies: evil Reptilons have invaded Planet X, kidnapped the brilliant Dr. Sarah Bellum, and forced humans to build a robot army to destroy Earth . You control a SWAT team member sent to rescue the scientists. Gameplay involves blasting through maze-like levels, freeing human hostages, pulling levers to activate escalators, and collecting gems to upgrade your ray gun . Food lockers provide health boosts, bombs damage surrounding enemies, and each level ends with a spaceship obstacle course . The arcade original featured Hall effect analog joysticks allowing 16-direction aiming .
Amiga
Released in 1990 by Domark under license from Atari Games/Tengen, developed by Teque Software with coding by Barry Costas, graphics by Neil Adamson, and music by Matt Furniss . The Amiga version supports one or two-player simultaneous cooperative play on a single disk . It features colourful isometric graphics with cartoonish presentation and smooth animation . The game preserves all core mechanics: hostage rescue, lever pulling, weapon upgrades, and the end-of-level spaceship sequence . Critical reception was strong: Computer + Video Games awarded 94%, Joystick 91%, ACE 885/1000, and The Games Machine 88% . Amiga Power praised it as "simply classic computer game entertainment" and "good honest fun" . Some criticisms noted a question mark over lasting appeal .
